gary larson does not like when people post his stuff online, and im sorry, but i did find this online somewhere, not that it makes it any better. hes one of the people whose stuff not only is still hilarious, but i think has shaped how i view the world… eh, im sure my family had more to do with that, but he deserves some credit. at least enough where he made some gawky teenage dork in the 80s laugh & be happy by clipping his comics out of the newspaper. (i think i still have them all somewhere). anyway theres a lot of love for his humor.
but this one in particular always stood out to me. not because i understood it, like many of his cartoons, i didnt get it as a kid. it was only as i got older and reread some of the far side books i had, that i could more and more i understood. finding a purpose just seems to be one of those universal things… everyone was looking for it whether or not they were even capable of verbalizing it. the far side was able to get right to the heart of it through humor. we all know idiots like edgar who find their “purpose” with the most idiotic stupid things. people who just settle for whats in front of them instead of continuing the search for it. whether its through some shitty job, drugs, marriage or kids, theyve stopped looking and just survive.  but then again maybe that is what most satisfies them… what the hell do i know, i know i still havent found mine yet.
